A sad parting of friends, 2007-05-31*

She was telling this story while strapped in her car seat, looking at a tiny 8 page infant board book about turtles. The story she tells however far exceeds whatever content was in the books pages :P

(Shouting) "THIS.. IS.. a huge LARGE CREATURE that doing that!
Help! HEEELP! HEEEEELP!" said baby
"We're stand in this place
We must get out of this place
HELP! HEEELP! HEEEELP! HEEEEEELP! HEEEEEEELP!
We must go out from this place!
HELP! HEEEEELP!"

(Interrupted by someone talking to her. Continues with the same book after the interruption).

T for turtle
The turtles won, the turtles saved the day
Turtles!
Turtles swim through water
Turtles swim to the other turtles
Have to be found
On the land
"You, you went, you went to see the other turtles, about that
Turtle alright..
Hundred men that go, many don't have to"
(Sighs) "You haven't get it!"
"You mean you don't have to"
"You, you must, you must, you, you, you.. the turtles eat dinner"
"Now that I'm looking at fifty ringgit
The turtles can get dinner.. this one!"
"Please can get... when? When, when, when this all (indecipherable) comes..."
"SO! SO!" (Singsong voice) "Did.. you.. turn.. round?..
You must, you must see the turtle
But not live in the sea
You might get wet and your clothes, your clothes might get wet"
So they don't get in the sea
"When you go in the sea, you go in might get wet
So, you must stay on the land"
"Ohhhkayyy....MOMMY!"
"Your mommy say you must stay on the island
You must not stay in the sea
You, you, you have to, you have to wear your swimming suit
Look, when you drop on the water, not to wear something, something I don't know"
"Some getting you, red turtle... that's the turtle.. TAAAALK!
Getting you just now!
And the TURTLE GET YOU already!"

And daddy says you have to come in to sleep
But the swimming suit, it's, it's, it's dirty

"Baby must go... because... baby must go", said the turtle
"THE TURTLE MUST NOT GO!"
(In a very small, sad voice) But the baby said, "Sooo sad! Lost the turtle!"

(Very faint)You mmmuuussst go away on the seashore..."

Baby come! And said... "you must, you must go home little guy"
"(Indecipherable) one day I will"
And baby said, "(indecipherable) one day I will too, because baby saaad...
Let's sing on the beach... there's mud on the beach...
And there nothing to do", said baby
(Sounds like crying again) "Yes... come to hiiis, his home, but he... let's have something so cold

Pretending with daddy, 2007-05-28

Well, this isn't exactly storytelling, although she does tell a story within here. It's a very typical pretend play session with daddy that I happened to get on video, and it was too interesting not to post on here, enjoy! Bethany's speech is in black, daddy's is in blue.

Going on a journey, 2007-05-26

This one was recorded onto my MP3 recorder and transcribed from there. The background was very noisy and she was talking very softly at some parts, so I couldn't quite hear what she was saying at those points and indicate them by (indecipherable).

Of ants and other things, 2007-05-24*

(Speaking to herself) Well... this got a VERY long book

She stopped here because she got sidetracked, checking with me about what frogs really do eat...

Why the lack of new stories...

The reason I haven't posted any new stories for a few days now is not because she hasn't been telling them - she has - but because she suddenly became suspicious of me writing while she's talking ("mom, what are you writing?") and refused to continue unless I put the pen/pencil down - same with the camera. But I still have a last trick up my sleeve ;) - I managed to locate my old MP3 recorder, and she thinks, at least for now, that I'm enjoying some music on it just like on my iPod.

OK, I thought I'd recorded 4 or 5 stories from today, but apparently not - I messed up the recording settings and nothing recorded :(. Dumb me... oh well... I'll have to try again.

Brachiosaurus & Iguanodon, 2007-05-21

She was talking really fast for this one, I missed quite a lot of lines in between...it probably messes up her storyline, but what I did get is worth posting anyway. Sorry about the missed lines! I didn't even have time to indicate where they occur - she was going that fast! Oh yes, she was pretending to read a book of mine, completely unrelated to her story in any way.

They have lots of enemies
Actually brachiosaurus very big
Brachiosaurus very big before everybody
Even baby brachiosaurus very big

The dinosaurs have lots of fun

The fox and the hen, 2007-05-20

I transcribed this one straight into my laptop. I only started some time after she had, so I missed a lengthy earlier part of the story. Also, she was talking really softly, so I missed some lines even after I'd started. She was pretending to read the book "Molly Maran and the Fox". I've colour-coded the characters so you can easily follow the story: blue=dog, black=hen, red=fox, orange=rabbit, purple=sparrow, green=narrator. I hope I didn't mix anyone up!

"Rabbit, rabbit, rabbit..." (singing), the dog said
"Maybe you can do it again fox", said hen
The other fox didn't
They have to play in the house that they lived
And the fox, the dog, they all lived together
But the hen didn't
They all sing
"What" she yelled
She said "AHH, you can do it, and I cannot
Even I cannot, even I cannot
Even I cannot do it I have to do it

She was just "reading" one of her dinosaur books to herself. I typed this directly into my laptop, since I was already sitting here while she was doing this. Missed a few lines as she was talking so softly!

She was pretending to read "Malaysian Mammals". I transcribed this one using pen and paper, but I think I'm getting the hang of it, so I hardly missed anything this time! I'm sticking to green font for her narrator's voice and other colours for others.

I was looking through her e-diary and realized I'd missed copying and pasting this story from 2 weeks ago.

I was trying to transcribe another story by her, but she was too fast for me! Here's the little that I got. It's obvious that Narnia is her inspiration.

"they cannot do that" said polly
"what's the picture" diggory said
"alright" said uncle andrew
"you just tell me, i'll be right here, alright", said uncle andrew
"don't come near me, i'm in the first"
"i saw a cat"
"how is she?"
"she might eat me"

"uncle andrew with polly and the girl is lost
we have to find him in the house"

An evening's tale, 2007-05-14**

This is transcribed from a video I managed to get of her while in full swing (she has only relatively recently started to become completely oblivious to me once she's involved in her own thing, either storytelling or pretend play - previously I wouldn't have managed to get a video like this).

I've split the video into two, but they were really one long continuous take.

"My mommy says, I am a naughty boy, I have to go home
My mommy says I have to go home
(Sigh) So I have to go home!"
Said him.. them baby
"I haaave to! I haaave to!"

The green people drink too often (indecipherable)
She not drink at all, but she drink, she drink everytime
Singing "in and out, up and down, standing still or spinning around,
in and opposite, see what opposite can be turning, turning round"
"I thought you made of wood and wire
You made of REAL bones!"
"I know I am, but I have to go home"
(indecipherable)

PART TWO
(turns page)(Pointing as if to the title) "In search of the king"
(Whimpers) Find the top (to herself)

Baby seem to often ride
She not even wear there
And she cried (mumbles)
And said you (indecipherable)
"In and out, up and down, standing still"
"OH IT'S ME!"
"I.. I.. I just singing

"Oh, you here!", said the mommy
"How are you going to get in?"

And she didn't sing again, she have enough!

An afternoon's tale, 2007-05-14

I directly transcribed this story while she was telling it, using a pen and paper, so I missed a line here and there as I couldn't write fast enough! Everything below are her words only (except the bits in parentheses). I'm going to use three different font colours here so you can see the different characters she was in her narrative. The green font is her narrator's voice.

"Oh, you didn't know that?... Oh, you didn't know that..."

I just asked the lady to clean it"
"You didn't go there for a holiday... there was a scary monster... you didn't ask your mommy to clean it!
There's a scary monster... no! no! no! no! no! no! no! no! no!"

"MAMA! PLEASE GET OUT OF HERE!
(More calmly) Mom... please get out of here...

First transcribed story, 2007-04-15

Storytelling from Bethany just now - I started transcribing some time after she'd started, and with the dinosaur story I stopped transcribing before she'd finished as I was doing this while in a chat session with a friend. Bethany was telling these stories while pretending to read from the Simon & Schuster Picture Pocket Book titled DINOSAURS. Told with full dramatic expressiveness, as usual, of course! Everything below are her exact words only.
