I first started capturing her storytelling using the video mode on our digital camera, around about April, but she soon refused to let me film her. So I tried writing her stories while she told them, using pen and paper. That lasted for only a few stories too, before she caught on. Since then, I've been recording her using a mini MP3 recorder, which is pretty unobtrusive, and transcribing the audio later. She then objected strongly to this as well... Nowadays I use a combo of MP3 and video to record her before transcribing. I only manage to record a fraction of the stories she tells. I always have a backlog of stories on the recorder that still need transcribing, as it's impossible for me to keep up with her. To help new readers, I've marked my favourite stories with a star (*), so at least you have somewhere to start if you don't know where to begin. Don't forget to check the older archives too - there are some gems in there as well!

Corythosaurus writes a story, 2007-09-06**

I can’t get over the complexity of this story. Aladar catches Corythosaurus writing his own book, but in one of Aladar’s own books, and gets mad at Corythosaurus, admonishing him to write his own story in his own book. Corythosaurus proceeds to do so. At the end of it, Aladar congratulates Corythosaurus on writing a good story. She really is working at perfecting this story within the story concept!

ETA: OK, I'm colour-coding the transcription below – I was just told the whole thing is too confusing. Black is when B's talking to me. Navy blue is when she's telling the story/dialogue between Aladar and Corythosaurus, and green is Corythosaurus's story.

“Aladar and the Fonix

Dear old friend... Peek with Corin.... The Dear Old Friend With Aladar That Morning

The Aladar and the Fog and the Fonix

The Aladar and the Fonix”

(Me: what is a Fonix?)

That is his friend, Porip with Aladar

“Illustrations by Aladar T. Waters”

’Dear old friend,’ Corythosaurus was writing one of his own books of all, after he wanted to write to it, their own noises, they are out of time

Aladar was so mad to see in one of his books, writing by Corythosaurus... he wanted them to, him to write his own self

The end!

“Porin lived in a long poem

Chapter.. Chapter One... Porin

Porin was very naughty today, and no one didn’t look of it, and no one did it, but only Onit. Porin was trapped by a Knight, and the others were in the house, and so the Knight couldn’t get in the house but it was too small for it.

‘Oh... maybe I shouldn’t do this without a knight,” he said... to his pine(?)

No time for it to losing, to learn, uhm, to get out from his trap....

Doorway... it was locked, so he can’t get out because the Knight is his prisoner!

And his prisoner got by the Orin of course, without Porin

‘I’m getting some help.... HELP!!!’ he said, ‘HELP’ again, ‘HEEEELP!!!.... HEEEELP!!!.... HEEEELP!!!.... HEEEELP!!!’

And for a second later he said, ‘HEEEELP!!!’ until the whole ground was shaking, with cheers and claps, ‘HEEEELP!!! HEEEELP!!! One of you’, until for a second, ‘HEEEELP!!!!!’, he.. he shouted again for help, until a sudden someone came and helped him

‘HEEEELP!!!’ said the other one, ‘HEEEELP!!!’, until for a second someone helped the other one

Then no one was there either, not in the caves, they took him in the house, then he goed inside.. too”

“GOOD SHOT!” says says Aladar, “Corythosaurus, you you you you saved someone.... but in the night... who was it?”

“It was Corin..... the other Corythosaurus.... YES!” (chuckles)

After the story above, I left the recorder on and conducted a short “interview” with the author J. It was a spontaneous thing, I was really a bit mixed up as to her story characters!

Me: Is Corin the Corythosaurus in the story that Corythosaurus is writing?

B: No

M: Who’s Corin?

B: Corin is another Corythosaurus, he’s not writing... he was in Aladar’s favourite book

M: Oh, Corin was reading Aladar’s favourite book

B: Yes, but.. but it was scary, and Aladar didn’t write his scary book

M: Then what about the first Corythosaurus, what was he doing?

B: He was recording the other one, Corin

M: Oh, so who’s the one who’s the illustrator, is it Corythosaurus or is it Corin?

B: It was... T-Rex

M: T-Rex? Was the illustrator for whose book?

B: Uhm, it was.. it’s Aladar’s book

M: OK, so T-Rex is the illustrator for Aladar’s book

B: Yes

M: Corin is writing his own story... is Corin writing a story?

B: No, the other Corythosaurus

M: Oh, the other Corythosaurus is writing a story

B: Yes

M: And Corin is in the story

B: Yes

M: OK. So now Aladar is writing a book and Corythosaurus is also writing a book. So there are two books right?

B: And... and T-rex too

M: T-rex is also writing a book

B: Yes

M: So there are three books

B: Yes, and..

M: And Corin is? Reading the book..

B: Yes... and Porip

M: Who is Porip?

B: He’s another creature, but I don’t know what is he

M: Is he a dinosaur?

B: No

M: Porip is not a dinosaur

B: No

M: Is Porip inside the story or is he Aladar’s friend?

B: He’s in the story and he’s Aladar’s friend

M: Both

B: Yes... Aladar says, “GOOD SHOT!”

M: To who?

B: Corythosaurus, because he saved someone, it was Corin and Porin

M: Did Corythosaurus save someone in the story?

B: Yes, it was Corin and Porin

M: But that was in the story that who was writing?

B: (makes funny noises)

M: Was that... I mean did Corythosaurus really save him, or did he save him in the story only?

B: Only in the story

M: OK

B: GOOD SHOT said Aladar!

M: Hehe, you like that huh?

B: Yes, and Aladar said Good Shot! That he says. (Distracted into pretend play) Ma I’m trying to get up there so Compsognathus and Aladar can come down and sit in there, I’m trying to reach them, it’s too high...
